One of our passions is the ethical rehoming of Australian Brumbies (wild horses).
Brumbies are considered a 'pest' in Australia and for that reason their numbers are controlled.
One of the best outcomes for these beautiful horses is that they are handled and re-homed.
All of our brumbies are passively trapped and are sourced from The Brumby Project (www.thebrumbyproject.com).
From time to time there will be a brumby in our care who has been entrusted to us by The Brumby Project to begin their handling journey. We are passionate about giving these brumbies the best start to life by utilising ethical horsemanship to communicate with them about the comings and goings of domestic life (the good life!). These brumbies will be at various levels of handling/training and vet work, and will not be made available for adoption until it is safe to do so. If you would like to be a part of your adopted horses early handling, get in touch as we can show you how to work with your brumby before they go home.
A therapy home is one of the absolute BEST outcomes for brumbies, because they typically love people and are very sweet natured. They also have exceptional social skills and emotional intelligence (for lack of a better horsey term, they are very perceptive and 'in tune' emotionally). However, this is ONLY true if the brumby has been started by a knowledgable handler who has maintained the brumbies sense of self, a sense of control over their situation, and has nurtured all of their beautiful personality traits throughout their early and ongoing handling (such as curiosity and playfulness). These are the traits that are the most useful in equine assisted therapy settings, as these horses are fantastic initiators of human interactions and they are incredibly expressive, making it very easy to form human-animal bond (compared to a horse that is mostly disinterested in hanging out with humans).
These are very special horses who will be going to approved homes only. Brumbies must be kept in herd-living arrangements and with special care to their 5 freedoms being provided. We can provide more information about this on request.
Fern is a 2-3yo filly from the Tuan/Toolara (QLD) forestry. She started her handling in January 2023 at The Brumby Project and was quickly identified to be an excellent candidate for a future therapy home.
Fern is curious and intelligent. She has an excellent 'recovery time' and is a good type. She looks to be reaching 14hh with still growing to do.
Fern is a proven Therapy Horse, she has been involved in many of my client sessions (kids and adults) and is a client favourite! She has proven to be very safe to work with. She has also done an obstacle clinic and loved it! Videos are available.
Fern will be available for adoption to an approved home. We will keep working with her until she finds the perfect home. Fern is fully vetted (teeth, feet, vaccinations, worming).
She will be started under saddle, however will not be recommended for therapeutic riding as she will be a green broken horse.
Fern has been scoped and is not in foal.
There are HEAPS of updates about Fern and her training journey on our instagram @wild_at.heart_horses so make sure you follow if you are interested in what is involved in the early gentling of a wild horse.
